Treatments Methods

At mindfulSF we are committed to helping people move towards what is most meaningful to them in life. Through a detailed assessment process (1-3 sessions), we work to understand how specific thought patterns and behaviors may be getting in the way for you. We work collaboratively to establish treatment goals and to introduce strategies for coping that are aimed at increasing quality of life.  Movement towards goals is supported by practicing skills both during and in between therapy sessions.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) are considered the gold-standard of OCD and anxiety treatment. CBT helps people identify the connection between thoughts, feelings, and behaviors, and learn new ways of responding to difficult thoughts and feelings. ERP is a CBT technique that involves gradual and repeated exposure to situations that are challenging to move towards. Repeated exposure practice can help people embrace doubt and uncertainty in service of living a full and meaningful life. We work collaboratively with clients to face their fears in a gradual and supportive manner. Treatment is approached at a pace that feels manageable for each individual. For more information about ERP take a look at https://iocdf.org/about-ocd/treatment/erp/.

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is an evidence-based treatment that teaches people ways to acknowledge and allow difficult thoughts and feelings, while committing to values-based behaviors. ACT focuses on enhancing day-to-day quality of life. ACT can assist you with clarifying what’s important to you and taking concrete and manageable steps towards valued directions. Since trying to get rid of difficult thoughts and feelings often exacerbates symptoms, ACT supports people with developing new ways of relating to internal experiences so that they no longer get in the way of living life how you would like to be. mindful self-compassion

We often notice that people who struggle with OCD and anxiety-related struggles also experience high levels of self-criticism and shame. Self-criticism and shame can add additional layers on top of already difficult situations. Have you ever experienced a stressful situation that was already painful and then blamed yourself for it? Did it help? Mindful Self-Compassion assists us with tapping into the innate human capacity for kindness towards ourselves and others. What if rather than blaming ourselves in the face of suffering, we could learn ways to be our own greatest supporters? Research has shown that Mindful Self-Compassion can assist with decreasing rumination and self-criticism, which are predictors of anxiety and depression (Neff 2003a; Raes 2010).
